MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING RESEARCH GROUP CONFERENCE in association with the

MANAGEMENT CONTROL ASSOCIATION

19 and 20 November 2020

ONLINE CONFERENCE FOR 2020

This year, the conference theme will focus on “New Public Management (NPM) with a Twist: What the Private Sector Can Learn from the Public Sector". We aim to interpret this theme broadly, and encourage submissions discussing NPM related developments in (management) accounting and control research, education, and practice. Although papers focusing on the conference theme will be preferred, papers are invited that address any area of research, education and practice within management accounting and control. Papers from practitioners are especially welcome.

Each day of the conference will include plenary presentations and panel discussions. So far, the following invited speakers have confirmed their attendance at this year’s conference:

Ileana Steccolini, Professor of Accounting, Essex Business School

Ileana Steccolini is a Professor of Accounting at Essex Business School. Her expertise develops at the interface among accounting and public administration and management, covering, among others, public sector accounting, budgeting, performance management and accountability, reform and change processes, governmental financial resilience, inclusion, participation and gender in public services. She is Joint editor of Financial Accountability and Management, the chair and founder of the Accounting and Accountability Special Interest Group within the International Research Society of Public Management, the Chair of the Standing Scientific Committee of the European Accounting Association, and a member of the IRSPM board.

Laurence Ferry, Professor in Accounting, Durham University

Dr Laurence Ferry is an award winning Professor in Accounting for Democracy at Durham University Business School, Head of Department for Accounting, a Senior Leader on the Dean’s Faculty Executive Team, Senator on the University Senate, member of CIPFA’s International Advisory Board and Adviser at the UK Parliament having been a prestigious Parliamentary Academic Fellow. He earned his PhD from the Warwick Business School, is a qualified chartered accountant, and holds a first class accounting degree. His research, teaching and consulting covers accounting and accountability with a specific focus on the public sector where he is a very well recognized international expert in public financial management. During REF2021 he has published over 30 journal articles, whilst winning various awards for best papers, impact and teaching. He serves as associate editor of Accounting Forum and on half a dozen editorial boards including Accounting Auditing and Accountability Journal, Qualitative Research in Accounting and Management, Public Money and Management and Journal of Public Budgeting Accounting and Financial Management.

Thomas Ahrens, Professor of Accounting, United Arab Emirates University

Thomas Ahrens is a Professor of Accounting. He earned his PhD at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Following positions at the University of Southampton, LSE, and the University of Warwick, where he served as Associate Dean for graduate programmes for three years, he joined UAEU in 2010. His research has focused on management accounting and control in the public and private sector. He is an associate editor of Management Accounting Research, a co-editor of the Journal of Management and Governance, and a member of the editorial boards of the Accounting Auditing and Accountability Journal, Accounting Organizations and Society, International Journal of Economics Management and Accounting, and Qualitative Research in Accounting and Management.

The first day (19th) will start at 9.00am (GMT) for half a day and end in a panel session hosted by ICAEW.

The second day (20th) will also begin with a plenary at 9.00 (GMT) and the remainder of the day consists mainly of parallel sessions in which research in various stages of development will be presented. PhD-students and early career researchers are particularly encouraged to present their work in this setting. The day will conclude with a CIMA sponsored plenary session.
