Event information

From the fall of the Medici Bank in the 15th Century to the financial crisis of 2008, the world has seen many financial scandals. Throughout history, a range of different responses have been employed in an effort to prevent these scandals. However, changes to financial reporting standards and reporting are increasingly becoming part of the solution – certainly the scale of the financial reporting response to the 2008 financial crisis would demonstrate this.

This conference will provide an opportunity to explore how we learn from financial scandals. We will consider what history tells us about the development of accounting in response to these events and where we are today – assessing the role of financial reporting regulation and corporate gatekeepers. Finally, in the light of these findings we turn to a current example and consider how reporting has been part of the response to public anger about tax avoidance.
